Portfolio Piece #7 - Reflection

Reflection

In this Portfolio #7 Piece, I learned how to create a wiki site titled, "Growth and Development in Plant," via wikisites.google.com

In creating this wiki site, I encountered challenges mainly in the areas of managing and editing information on the pages. With help from fellow classmates and my determination to succeed, I was able to overcome those challenges.

This wiki site can be improved by including a navigational tool which allows a user to manoeuvre the site with less difficulty. Also, the implementation of a technique on the Assignment and Announcement page which facilitates an immediate response to student’s online submission of worksheets and assignments completed.

Portfolio Piece #7 - Wiki Creation

How wiki can be used to improve classroom instruction

As a result of the knowledge and experience gained about the usefulness from the creation of my wiki site for the execution of classroom instructions, I will endeavour to teach each student how to create and use their wiki site in order to access work posted. With the implementation of this tool, my students will be able to interact with each other through collaborative efforts and by reviewing other student’s work.

The classroom is dynamic and is quickly changing from text to media and this is often more meaningful because it changes the way educators engage and motivate students. Students are interacting with content differently when they can access it as many times as they need and see multiple representations of concepts. Students will be able to participate in online discussions by posting their comments during class time and receiving immediate response from teacher. Access to resourced materials, for example, digital version of text books can be posted online, greatly reducing the need for students to carry around heavy book bags. The level of student’s involvement and contribution to lesson will be better accessed by the teacher. This encourages students to use multiple tools and resources to represent their growing knowledge.

Portfolio Piece #6 - Reflection

 Reflection

In this Portfolio #6 Piece, I learned how to produce a video using the software Windows Live Movie Maker. This was created for my Grade 4 student’s Science lesson on types of Flowering and Non-Flowering Plants. After students would have seen the growth of plants in a previous lesson, this video will reinforce the concept that plants can grow and develop into flowering and non-flowering plants. Students will be better able to understand and relate what was learnt in class to what is seen in the video about the features for flowering and non-flowering plants.

In creating this video I encountered the challenge of cutting and setting the music to start at a certain point from the beginning of the video. After a few attempts, I was successful.

This video can be improved by adding another song with the use of the fade out, fade in technique and the recording of teacher’s voice explaining to students, the types of flowering and non-flowering plants shown.

Portfolio Piece #6 - Flowering and Non-Flowering Plants

How video can be used to improve classroom instructions

This aspect of my Science Lesson for my Grade 4 class looks at flowering and non-flowering plants. This video can be used to show students the types of flowering and non-flowering plants that exist. This will allow students to relate to what is written in their books with what is shown in this video. Just imagine an exploration taking place right within the classroom! The classroom will definitely come alive with great interest and discussions. This video will definitely meet the preferred learning style of students who are considered to be both visual and musical.
